EAST LONDON Industrial Development
Zone (ELIDZ) CEO Simphiwe Kondlo has
called on government to provide more
incentives in order to make South Africa’s
IDZs more competitive globally.
Writing in the company’s annual report,
Kondlo says “the East London IDZ faces
immense international competition in
attracting foreign direct investment (FDI):
Africa has not had a good track record on
this score.
“The East London IDZ is currently
lobbying the DTI for a number of policy and
operational mechanisms that would set this
foundation. High on the list is lobbying for
a more concrete legislative foundation for
the IDZ programme in order to ensure that
South Africa’s IDZs are well founded and
sustainable.
“This process has already started yielding
results as revised IDZ regulations were
already in circulation by the end of the
period under review,” he says.
