After 10 years of debate, accompanied by vociferous objections, London’s Heathrow Airport has finally got the UK government’s green light to build a third runway.
The airport, handling about 75 million passengers a year, is currently operating at around 99% capacity. With the new runway, the airport’s capacity will almost double to an expected 138 million passengers by 2050.
Gatwick, the other contender in the third runway chase, lost out.
