On 17 September 2021, the South African Revenue Service (SARS) announced an increase in the ‘General’ rate of customs duty, in terms of Part 1 of Schedule No.1 to the Customs and Excise Act, 1964, on grinding balls, classifiable in tariff subheading 7325.91, from free of customs duty to 15% ad valorem.
The rates of customs duty for the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom (UK), the European Free Trade Area (EFTA), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), MERCOSUR, and AfCFTA remain unchanged at free of customs duty.
The reasoning is contained in the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC) Report No.638.
