BLUE IQ, the Gauteng Provincial Government's R1,7 billion initiative to identify 10 mega projects to turn the province into a 'smart' one, has selected the City Deep Container Depot as one of the most crucial.
The Gauteng Province is funding the development, which includes turning it into an Industrial Development Zone, in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry, at a cost of R60 million.
The ten-year plan aims at creating an export-oriented growth centre, a pivotal point in a national platform for freight, distribution and logistics excellence.
It has been established by province that City Deep plays a critical role in the economy of Gauteng with 40% of all cargo exported via the port of Durban originating in City Deep.
Infrastructure upgrades include road construction on the Rosherville West and Lower Germiston roads and on Cleveland Road/N3 on- and off-ramps.
The City Deep IDZ is intended to offer a world-class, intermodal transfer facility where an Inland Port Authority can assist light industries within an industrial park.
