The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development has confirmed that the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in Limpopo is under control after the arrest of a Molemole farmer and auctioneer last week.
According to the department, although FMD is under control, the ban on gatherings of cloven hoofed animals has not yet been lifted.
Having met with the Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development this week, department minister Thoko Didiza said: “The veterinary services team is doing everything possible to ensure the situation does not cause any further economic harm.
“Since the outbreak in November last year, the team has followed up on over 140 properties with possible links to specific auctions and affected properties. To date 130 properties have been investigated and precautionary quarantine notices lifted on 87 properties.”
The minister has confirmed that the slaughter of cattle from affected properties has begun.
