Transnet Pipelines (TP), in collaboration with its customers, has successfully delivered jet fuel from Durban directly to OR Tambo International Airport.
TP chief executive Michelle Phillips said the fuel delivery system had been implemented as an additional measure to ensure the security of jet fuel supply, after the commissioning of accumulator tanks at Jameson Park in Gauteng.
The tanks have received the fuel, which flows through a repurposed existing line between Alrode and the airport.
“The jet fuel arrived at the airport on specification, going entirely through the Transnet pipeline system,” Phillips said.
She added that during the April 2022 floods jet fuel had been transported through the 24-inch Multi-Product Pipeline via Natref.
“This is the first time Transnet has delivered jet fuel from the coast, going entirely through the Transnet pipeline system.
"This alternative route will be used while Natref has a planned maintenance shutdown, and to supplement the normal supply from Natref to Transnet clients,” Phillips said.
“The successful delivery demonstrates Transnet Pipelines’ capabilities as a reliable pipeline solution for the supply of jet fuel from the coast to Ortia,” she said, adding that the parastatal would transport more jet fuel from Durban to OR Tambo in future.
