Black-empowered mining company Exxaro Resources and French independent power producer GDF Suez are partnering to build a privately owned 600MW power station near Lephalale, in Limpopo, Business Day reported on Tuesday.
It would be supplied with coal from Exxaro's proposed Thabametsi coal mine, which would be situated near the group's Grootegeluk colliery, on the Waterberg coalfield, the newspaper reported.
The coalfield supplied Eskom's Matimba power station and would also supply the Medupi power station, Business Day reported.
The new plant's power would be sold to Eskom.
The project would take about four years to complete.
Both parties were waiting for feedback on the proposal by the department of energy.
According to the newspaper, industry estimates were that the proposed plant could cost between R15 billion and R20bn, and that the coal mine would cost about R5bn.
