On 21 September 2018, the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (Itac) published the “Renewal of the Policy Directive on the Exportation of Ferrous and Non-ferrous Waste and Scrap Metal”, a policy directive of 10 May 2013. The renewed policy directive was renewed from 21 September 2018 until 30 June 2019.
By way of background, on 14 August the Economic Development Minister published for comment a draft notice of renewal of the policy directive to the Itac in terms of the International Trade Administration Act (ITA Act) on the exportation of ferrous and non-ferrous waste and scrap metal.
According to the Minister he was considering renewing the policy directive for a period of 9 months, during which period he intended to finalise a review of the directive, the reason being to ensure that there was no regulatory gap before a final decision was made on the continuation of the directive.
Stakeholders and interested parties were invited to submit comments on the draft renewal of the policy directive before the Minister decided whether to renew the directive. After due consideration of the matter and comments received, the Minister decided to renew the policy directive to Itac in terms of the ITA Act.
