French civil engineering company Eiffage has won the contract to renovate and extend the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Port of Matadi container terminal.
The Port of Matadi, 150km upstream of the mouth of the Congo River, is the country’s main port, handling 90% of its container imports and exports and general cargo.
Eiffage announced this week that it had secured the contract, valued at more than €100 million, through its subsidiary Eiffage Génie Civil Marine. The contract includes design and construction work to renovate and expand the existing container terminal.
“The contract, awarded by Matadi Corridor Terminaux à Conteneurs company, includes the construction of a new 350-metre-long by 30-metre-wide pile dock located in front of the existing Docks 5, 6 and 7, along with three 20-metre-wide access bridges through the existing dock,” Eiffage said in a statement.
The project includes the construction of an operations building and a workshop facility, as well as the refurbishment of the seven-hectare logistics hub.
“The worksite will be carried out while the dock remains operational during the various phases of works,” the company said.
The project is expected to take 27 months to complete.
The terminal is managed and operated by International Container Terminal Services, Inc. through its subsidiary ICTSI Cooperatif U.A.
