With a 400 000-TEU a year overflow from the Durban container terminal (DCT) Pier 2, as a number of berths shut-down one at a time as they are re-equipped and deepened, Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) is busy putting a contingency plan into place before the April 1 kick-off date.
New equipment – eight reach stackers, six mobile harbour cranes and 33 hauler/trailer combinations – are due to be delivered between now and year-end, and the Navis port management system is being installed at the Durban RORO terminal and Maydon Wharf, which are expected by TPT to handle the overflow.
