The Competition Commission has granted permission to two of Africa’s biggest airliners, South African Airways (SAA) and Air Mauritius, to form a joint venture on the route between Johannesburg and Mauritius.
The newly formed partnership will allow the two airlines to synchronise passenger and cargo capacity, and will unlock previously unattainable markets, the Commission said.
"It is expected that the joint venture will equally benefit the South African economy as it will lead to increased foreign currency earnings, improved capacity utilisation and employment, increased passenger numbers, increased cargo capacity, and expand the route network in new markets.”
While both airlines will share the operational costs on the route, the Commission also stated that the primary reason for granting the exemption was to promote exports from South Africa.
