Muifa, the latest typhoon to hit East China, is packing winds of up to 167 kilometres per hour, with gusts of more than 204 km/h while the storm approaches the coast of Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces.
Consequently, the Port of Ningbo and Shanghai’s deepwater port of Yangshan, Asia’s largest container hub, are halting operations ahead of Muifa’s arrival.
The typhoon follows closely after Hinnamnor, which brushed past the coast, temporarily closing Yangshan.
Muifa was likely to make landfall late tomorrow between Ningbo and Zhoushan city in Zhejiang, which had raised the level of emergency response to the storm, state broadcaster CCTV reported.
Muifa is currently located northeast of Taiwan, according to the US Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
Yangshan and other container terminals will begin halting some operations this evening, with all facilities to shut by tomorrow morning, Shanghai Port has advised.
The Meishan container terminal in Ningbo will close down tonight.
The coastal region is taking additional precautionary measures.
Some passenger train services connecting China’s east coast will be suspended from today, according to the local railway administration, while Ningbo said schools would close tomorrow.
