A delegation of 23 local agro-processing businesses landed in Shanghai yesterday to attend the SIAL China International Trade Fair for Food and compete for the country’s lucrative food and beverage market. The show has attracted more than 3 400 exhibitors from Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas.
“China ranks as the largest consumer of food and beverages with an estimated value of over one trillion euros [and] is projected to grow rapidly over the next two decades,” said Trade and Industry Minister Dr Rob Davies. “The rising levels of Chinese disposable income, increases in retail sales of consumer goods and remarkable growth for South African products such as wines puts us in a unique position to make inroads into this lucrative market.”
But while South African wine is well regarded in the region, the country’s wines face stiff competition from Argentinian and French producers.
