The City of Cape Town announced today (Friday) that the transport commissioner, Melissa Whitehead, had been suspended as a result of the alleged cover-up of tender irregularities.
The city council members voted during a closed session to place Whitehead on precautionary suspension pending an investigation into her conduct
Earlier this month, the city council decided that Whitehead and City manager Achmat Ebrahim be charged. Both were given until last Friday to respond and provide reasons why they should not be suspended. Ebrahim, who was accused of not reporting allegations against Whitehead, resigned last Friday.
An investigation by law firm Bowman Gilfillan determined there was enough evidence to charge Whitehead and she now faces a disciplinary enquiry for allegedly manipulating tenders for MyCiTi buses and interfering in the tender process for the Foreshore Freeway Project.
