Maersk has advised shippers to prepare for heavy delays at both terminals in Gqberha (Port Elizabeth) this week due to extreme weather conditions expected around the South African coast and equipment issues.
According to a customer advisory released this morning, the worst impact will be felt in Gqberha on Tuesday and Wednesday, with wave heights reaching eight metres.
This will negatively impact terminal operations and vessel movement, and vessels may slow down and/or seek shelter for safety.
In addition, Transnet is having challenges with its tug boat fleet in the Eastern Cape, says Maersk, and this is impacting vessel berthing and sailing.
Literally a perfect storm for carriers and shippers.
