Deutsche Afrika-Linien (DAL) has confirmed its commitment to the South African market with the purchase of a new vessel, set to operate between Europe and South Africa. According to a spokesman for the company, the new vessel will make its first calls at South African ports during March.“Continuing the naming tradition of DAL vessels, the new vessel has been named the DAL Kalahari and first entered into service at the end of February. Built in 2010, it is 305 metres long, 40 metres wide, and has capacity for 6 589 TEUs. It has a reefer capacity of 1400 plugs,” he said. This is particularly important as it increases the reefer-carrying capacity of the vessel and will allow DAL to improve its service, in particular, to the perishable export market.“The introduction of the new vessel has resulted in an increase in carrying capacity and confirms DAL’s confidence in the trade lane and its commitment to the customers it serves,” said the spokesman.
