Ar tificial Intelligence will be used to help protect an offshore oil platform off North Africa.Electro-optics security specialist HGH announced at the ADIPEC tradeshow taking place at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre that a SPYNEL sensor would be mounted on a high position on the platform to provide 360° sea coverage and a long-range surveillance up to the horizon, day and night.Data will be analysed through a new artificial intelligence (AI) module for CYCLOPE software.“Highly vulnerable, isolated in the middle of the ocean, offshore platforms represent a target of choice for terrorism,” the company claims.The major challenge for oil rigs is to be able to speed up their decision-making in the event of an unwanted critical situation, while facing harsh weather, extreme temperatures and vibrations, it says.Launched at ADIPEC, the AI software includes a deep learning module which enables automatic recognition and classification of all types of detected objects, such as RHIBs, wooden boats, swimmers a nd UAVs .Using smart behaviour analysis, operators can configure the software so that defined security actions are automatically triggered if abnormal behaviours are detected, or if a boat approaching the rig has an unknown AIS, according to Hervé Berthelot, Middle East business developer at HGH.
